   Pinewood Derby

The pinewood derby is one of Cub Scout's most well known events.  Cub Scouts and an adult partner work together to fashion a gravity powered race car from a kit provided by the pack.

2020 PINEWOOD DERBY

The pinewood derby is traditionally held in February.  Check the pack calendar or talk with your leader for information about pinewood derby clinics and when to check in your car.  The Northern Star council 2019 Pinewood Derby rules can be viewed at:

OVERVIEW:

The first Pinewood Derby was held in 1953 by Cub Scout Pack 280C of Manhatten Beach, California. The first reference to the Pinewood Derby in a Scout publication was in the October, 1954 issue of Boy's Life. The June, 1955 Program Helps listed "Wheels, Wings, and Things" as a theme. The Cub Scout Program Quarterly gave instructions for running the Pack Meeting Derby. The Supply Division's catalogs had kits available for $2.75 for a package of eight. Over 15 million kits were sold during the next 20 years. Today, over 80 million car kits have been sold.

SPORTSMANSHIP:

Scouting encourages good sportsmanship.  Cars WILL be disqualified if the Scout or parents display unsportsmanlike conduct at the race site.  Remember it is all about having fun.   Unfortunately at an event like this with scoring, many boys will be disappointed at not finishing higher or their car not looking as nice as another car.  Assist your Pack Leaders at emphasizing the fun of building a car and taking time to play with friends at the event, and please don't drag your son over to look at the scores if he isn't interested.
