Youth Protection Training

Youth Protection training is required for all BSA registered volunteers.

Youth Protection training must be taken every two years. If a volunteer’s Youth Protection training record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be reregistered.

You do not have to be a registered member or have a member ID to take Youth Protection training.

To take Youth Protection training go to MyScouting.org and create an account.

From the MyScouting.org portal, click on E-Learning and take the Youth Protection training.

Upon completion, you may print a certificate of completion to submit with a volunteer application or submit the completion certificate to the unit leader for processing at the local council.

When your volunteer application is approved, you will receive a BSA membership card which includes your member ID number. After you receive your membership card, log back into MyScouting, click on My Profile and update the system by inputting your member ID number. This will link your Youth Protection training records, and any other training, in MyScouting to your BSA membership.

VIRTUS -Catholic Youth Protection Training

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati requires adults who have contact with children to have a criminal background check through fingerprinting and to attend a VIRTUS® Child Awareness Session. The Ohio Revised Code also requires certain employees (for example, teachers, teachers aides, school employees, cafeteria monitors, playground monitors, and coaches with pupil activity supervisor permits) to have a criminal background check through fingerprinting. The laws of the State of Ohio and the policies of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati regarding criminal background checks through fingerprinting must be adhered to.

The Archdiocese of Cincinnati defines a  regular volunteer is an adult who is not a cleric or employee (for example, a catechist, scout leader, coach, server coordinator, etc.) who functions in regular relationship with children. This includes interns, student teachers, and others in similar capacities.

A regular volunteer is one who has contact with children:

  • on an overnight event
  • on at least a monthly basis; or
  • in a multi-day program (eg: Vacation Bible School)

A regular volunteer has contact with children at least once a month, or participates in any overnight event with children.  It does not include the occasional volunteer, such as a driver or chaperone whose contact with children is less than one hour a month for individual activities that are not overnight.

A regular volunteer may not have contact with children until an acceptable background check through fingerprinting and attendance at a VIRTUS® Child Awareness Session are completed in accord with the current policies of the Archdiocese.
